Little Things to Sew, Baby Carrier

My friend Jeanne, recomended that I try and make this baby carrier from the Oliver and S book "Little things to Sew". She was right , it was a fun easy and very satisfying project. Ady loves carrying her baby in it and she runs around while wearing it, forgetting about the precious cargo she is carrying.

I used a big polka dot fabric called " Daisies and Dots" by Robert Kaufman

The straps fabric are made from a Jo-Anne's cotton quilt fabric.

It is a great new store close to the new Whole Foods on Washington street. The store has a great selection of merchandise from a wide price range.

This is the most amazing button that I inherited from a very dear friend's Grandma. The good news.....I have 3 more!

I am so happy that the animal prints are in this season.

Classic picnic blouse and shorts

I have had these photos for a while, but summer has been so busy, warm and full of great trips that I am only posting these now.

The fabric combo worked really well, and the pattern is SO cleverly thought out. I love the flat front of these short most of all.

The combination of fabrics worked so well . I love the gray / pink combo

Classic Picnic Blouse

Pink and white polka dots are just so much fun!
I recently finished this Oliver and S Picnic Blouse for my daughter. It was my first time sewing with these patterns and they are great. Clear instructions and this blouse was great to make.

I used voile for the blouse that I found at JoAnne's last season and the buttons are from a friend's stash that was passed onto me.

I am going to make another one in cotton. The Voile is great for this weather, but feels very delicate to me for a busy girl running around.

I found these great fabrics and now want to make the shorts for her.

Spring = Chicks!

Every wednesday I spend the day in the company of a charming young lady. This wednesday it was very rainy and windy and so for some reason she did not feel like running errands with me!
A while ago I saw this project on the Crafty Crow, so it was decided that we will go to our local fabric and yarn store to buy a pom pom maker! Yeah!

Oh how fun! I have never used one of these devices , but it is so easy. Our chick did not have the florist wire legs from the tutorial, we used pipe cleaners and our chick is MUCH bigger (I got the bigger pom size) so ours is just sitting happily looking at the world!

Oh and this guy is wearing a scarf, spring can be cold in Boston!

Now I have to make at least 5 more!

Linen hat.

Yes, everyday around here feels more like spring and summer!
Today I would like to show you this linen hat that I just love! I first thought that the decoration makes it too dressy , after all it is a fabric hat. But the more I look at it the more I like it.

I used a copper color linen for the hat and for the decoration I used a small pink vintage feather, a piece of leopard silk chiffon and a piece of Anna Maria Horner fabric.(love)

This hat could be worn everyday, but I can see it with an amazing linen suit, or dress.

Linen skirt.

After my promise to sew more for myself I have purchased and cut some skirts to sew for summer, but found myself needing an in between skirt that is not made from summer prints and will go with "most" of my other clothes.

Enter the linen skirt, and what better colors to use than latte brown and grey-ish black!

As you can see it goes really well with a red and white polka dot sweater!

I came across this great skirt from Anna Maria Horner. And I think what my skirt needs is one more row of elastic. I also did not make mine so wide and measured my hips and added a bit onto the side to help it fit. It is true that wearing it higher in the waist makes the skirt fit, flattering.

I can't wait to wear it with a t-shirt and cardigan!

A while ago I had to patch a favorite skirt and while doing this I quickly traced the pattern and made this skirt.
It was really easy and quick and looks great, but best of all she likes it!

Small change , big impact!

A while ago on one of my many wonders around the isles of Savers I came across this amazing piece of patchwork/fabric history!

Someone went to great trouble to cut up outdated clothing form the 60's and 70's and sew them together!

I could hardly believe my luck and grabbed it at once!

But after I washed it and looked at it I was unsure of its future. I first thought of cutting it in two and making two "matching" throws for the kids rooms.

The way this was pieced together though was row by row across so just cutting in two was not an option. And then there is was one day! I was going to hang it on the wall!

I can't tell you how much pleasure I get from this big color change! Every time I come up the stairs and see it I just love it! It has made the room so warm and cozy!

The kids also love lying on the bed and choosing their favorite block.

Spring hats in the making

It has been so hard to get going this year. But wait it is really hard for me every year!

I have some amazing fabrics to work with this season!

Look at this hat! I am so pleased with how it came out. The fabric is so lovely and easy to work with. I also made a similar hat with the blue roses.

I love how the roses just gets absorbed by the hat .

Organic cotton cowl

This week I finished two more cowl scarfs. One for me and one for this little girl.

After making the previous one for myself so big I started with far less stitches and it worked out really well. I find myself keeping mine on the entire day, you forget that you are wearing it!

The other amazing bonus is the yarn. I used Nature's Choice organic cotton from Lion Brand Yarn.

Wow so worth the price and so soft and comfy to wear.

Luckily I had yarn in this cream color that matches her coat and made up this neck warmer for her!

I love the way it looks with the coat, but best of all....she likes it and she keeps saying how soft it is !

Happy Valentines Day!

Valentines day: This year we made fast, easy Valentines cards. I gave the kids red paper and white paint, white, pink,red and purple crayons and we started crafting.
The aim was to make heart shapes with circle foam brushes, but that lasted only as long as my demo!
They then had fun using their hands, bubble wrap, and anything else they could find that would make a pattern on the paper.

After the cards dried I cut them into heart shapes and we wrote all the fiends names on them.

The other craft I made with Ady is a heart garland. This was great fun. We first drew the hearts onto watercolor paper with crayon and then used watercolor paint to paint over the crayon and now she is old enough to keep the paint inside the heart shape.

After they dried I cut them out and we strung them onto bakery twine.

They look so much like spring that I will leave them up for a while.

Crochet cowl

I am starting to fall in love with crochet again! It has been so long since I have done this that I am taking my time and teaching myself again. Lion brand has a great section on learning to crochet.

Here is a cowl scarf I made last week. I used the very bulky Wool- Ease Thick and Quick yarn form Lion brand and it really was great to see just how fast I could see progress.

I found a great free pattern here.

I love it, but know that I have a LOT to learn. Not only do I now have an excuse to get stuck on the couch watching really , really bad TV, I also get something in exchange!

I already purchased new yarn. The next one I will make will have less stitches as to make the scarf more snug around the neck and will be 100% cotton . I find myself getting very itchy by the end of a day.

Monkey pajamas

Ady is really outgrowing her clothes too fast. I turned around this last week and she was out of PJ's that are warm, cozy but not fleece. This girl can really overheat so flannel it best for her to sleep in!

A few years ago I bought two pieces of Sock Monkey flannel by Moda, in a great quilt shop in New Hampshire.
I was immediately pulled in by the monkeys and thought that she would love them. I now realize that they could be scary to a little girl. She took two days to agree to try them on and the good news is that she now loves them! Phew!
I did not have enough of the fabric to make a matching top but I found a soft long sleeve t-shirt on sale and i think the color matches very nicely. To make sure she will be able to wear them for a while, I added a three inch seam allowance to be let out as needed.

As for a pattern, I just traced around a pair of pants that fits her and added here and there to make them roomy for sleep time. I also added the elastic band in a separate piece in stead of folding the top over. I think this helps with the fit in the waist.

Making goo!

We have had a lot of indoor days lately. I have to say it is kind of fun to just play and not go anywhere.

On our last trip to the library I found this great book. I know there are a lot of books out there on science for kids , but this one is simple and I have almost all the ingredients in the the house.

Of all the experiments we have done so far this one is my favorite!

Making goo out of corn starch. It is truly amazing!

The book : I'm a scientist, Kitchen by Lisa Burke
She also has a backyard book that looks interesting for summer.

You start off by measuring two cups of corn starch in a bowl and slowly adding one cup of water.
It is pretty hard to mix as you can see !

Then add food coloring of your choice and keep mixing!

It is really interesting how my kids played so differently with the same goo.
My son got his hands in at once , but my daughter wanted more spoons and things to prod it with and would not put her hands in!

It was amazing to see how long they kept going. Making balls and watching the goo go from solid to liquid and back to solid. If you push your hand down on it the goo is a solid , but if you scoop with a spoon it becomes a liquid.

FUN!

Placemats and napkins

January only has one thing going for it. My son's school has a silent auction fundraiser.
This is a big event for the school and everyone is very excited!

For the event I am donating six placemats and matching napkins with a carry bag.

These look so very summery to me with the red and white oil cloth . The placemats have cotton fabric as a backing. I finished them with a double fold wide bias binding.

This is how I sew the napkins:

I fold the napkin seams over twice in stead of using the Serger and then sewing the seam. When I get to the end of a seam I stop the machine in the needle down position, lift the foot and roll the seam under the machine foot. Now lower the foot onto the seam.

Then I sew forward one stitch , stop again with the needle in the down position , lift the foot of the machine, turn the fabric, lower the foot and sew backwards to secure the corner. Now you are ready to sew another side.

A little decorating for the new year.

Every new year bring new looks and a lot of re-decorating in my house.

Nothing, nothing gets me through this time of the year like moving furniture and a little decorating, oh and washing the curtains and scrubbing those spots I never get around to!

I started with the kids room. Having a boy and girl share a room keeps it pretty neutral. I did want to room to look more unified and found these great duvet covers from Ikea. They have similar prints but different colors. It really pulls the room together.

I have lately been hanging a lot of fabric on the walls and the kids got this great wall piece I have had for maybe the last 10 years and I have never found the right spot for it. It works really well with the covers because of the similar, bright colors.

I changed the curtains to plain white ones I found in my box of curtains to use later and they make things light and bright. I also made a garland from vintage handkerchiefs. I used a double fold bias binding easy and quick and I like the way it came out!

We have needed a book space for a while in there and I found this great piece also from Ikea. I have two wicker baskets that has been around for a while .The one we use for library books and the other for the Tin Tin and Asterix books.

I finally took out the rocking chair from the room. It was such a nice chair and I spent so much time in that chair, but it is very big and bulky. This green chair works really well in the corner and I bought this one from Savers for $35 years ago.

I will show you more later in the week!

Wow , what a busy season and so nice to be just home with the kids. Hanging out, playing in the snow, doing lots of drawing, painting and building Lego .
Now this week I have to clean up the studio, put away, dare I say everything from the last show and get to work.
My one BIG new years resolution is going to be to sew more , for myself and others. Here is hoping it will be a really great year to be creative and wishing you the same!

Here are a few photos of our holiday season.

The kids still love watercolor painting. We combine the crayons and paints for a better picture with more detail.

Then one morning we woke up to this. It was such good timing, school was closed and we could just enjoy it.

This photo tells our Christmas story, before you could turn around it was over!

Blueberry pancakes for breakfast.

I did manage to sew two stockings for them on the 24th. So it was a FAST project. I traced their hands in felted wool and used a great red polka dot wool for the stocking. I really wanted to add some embroidery on the hands and around the top, add a pom pom, but I already packed these away....maybe I will get around to this next year.

Holly Jolly Decorating!

I really have a deep love for all my deer. I can't wait every Christmas to take them out and this year I have been lucky enough to receive three red velvet ones as a gift. Oh happy days!

Since I have been collecting vintage christmas ornaments they have really thinned out in the Thrift Stores. I did find a trio of these sweet pine cone and pipe cleaner elves on ski's. I love them!

I did not hang my very old real glass ornaments as the kids did the hanging this year. And believe me it is a work in progress. For me liking things a certain way, it is a bit of a challenge but so far we have only broken two ornaments!

Sowa Holiday market

So, tired achy but very happy is how I feel this morning.
The Sowa holiday market was great! I was lucky to be next to great crafters and that always make it so much fun.

The market was really well run and very well attended.
Thanks to everyone that came to visit.
The space was really tight and it did take me a while before I could figure out how to use the 7x7 space, but in the end it all worked out really well.

Chaos in the studio

This time of year I am surrounded by quite a big of chaos!

I m getting ready for a show this saturday and I find myself stepping over piles, or rather groups of work that is half done, almost ready to pack and boxes already packed and ready to go. How is it that towards the end my table is so full that I have to work on the floor?

Look at all those scraps on the floor....a BIG cleanup is in order!( for house and studio)

On this houndstooth cape/scarf I used this leather and gold bead piece to hide the snap.

This is my favorite so far for the season (have I said that before?)

The leopard and red and white stripe knit just asked for this leather flower.

I love this new scarf. I have been wearing one of these while working and it is cozy, warm and looks pretty good!

I hide the large snap under a trinket. In this case a vintage buckle.

The back is not too long and this helps so you can wear it over a jacket or even inside a coat.

While reading through blog land this weekend nursing the flu, yes I had my flu shot, I found this site and thought it lovely.
The idea is to take a baked goody or bread, wrap it up with a note of good wishes and take it to a neighbor or family member that you know that is in need of a kind deed or word.

Oh and you have to wear an apron!(LOVE)

Halloween mermaid costume

This was the fist year that I made one of the kids a costume for Halloween. It was so much fun that I think that I would like to make this a tradition form now on. It was so much fun seeing her in the outfit and to hear her tell people that her Mom made it.

Also it was easy. It's a costume and its Lycra. You don't have to really seam everything and it really only has to last for a weekend.

I used a pattern for the top, and cut up pieces of contrasting lycra in strips to sew into the sleeve before sewing it .

The "skirt" part I just cut in a basic shape of a "tail" and gathered at the waist. It worked really well. I had a lot of fabric left over , so I made a three tier frill in the back to add just a little more.

The crown closes in the back and I use the hot glue gun to add the "pearl treasures" on the front.

The belt came as a after thought. the skirt part looked too full. I attached a imitation pearl brooch to the front .

A Sweet Mermaiden doll.

Be still my beating heart!

I am so in love with this little mermaid, I love her, love her, love her!

A is going to be a mermaid for Halloween (costume pictures to follow). To go with the costume I decided to make this dolly for her to carry around as company.
I came across this free download from Hillary Lang's book: Wee wonderfulls. She also has a great blog with fun pictures of her creations .

This was a fun, easy project to make. The pattern was very clear and clever! She is small, just as long as my hand, so you do need a knitting needle or such to get all those corners turned out and the stuffing in all the right places.

I did not have flannel for the body , so I cut up an old pillow case . I love the vintage velvet for her hair. I also think it is easier to turn inside out than corduroy.

I am not very good with embroidery, but I managed to make her face look OK!
If you have time I would recommend you try this lovely project. Took me just under two hours. Great weekend project.

Halloween crafts

The past weekend the kids and I made some fun Halloween crafts.

It is always fun to work with hand prints. You start by painting the hand , not the thumb, with black paint and print one hand then the other, overlapping the palms.

You can add eyes and paint the face with white paint.

The other craft that is also fun to make are spiders out of egg cartons.

The kids loved painting them. After they dry add eyes, nose, mouth and teeth if you choose!

I used a hole punch to make the holes for the pipe cleaners to go through .

The kids liked choosing different colours for the legs.

I had the pleasure of going to the thrift shop with my friend Teresa today and right at the end I found these!

They are in pairs, I think they are shoe buckles!

What a strange week of getting use to different weather, rain and sun at the same time. Then there was Columbus day in the mix , that meant that Tuesday was Monday and the week was strange from the get go!
But it has been a good week in the studio, lots of scarf making this week. Bold patterns, leopard and purple with orange, houndstooth and peacock blue.
Today I am going to try and start a halloween costume for Ady. Will see how far I get.

The roller beanie!

I just love the way this looks. Very similar to the berets but a total different style. Easy to fold up and put in your pocket on those cold windy days.

Today I am sharing the new berets in the Pink Sequin family.

Remember all that great felt I bought a while ago. It is so easy to work with and the quality is amazing! I find these colors really pleasing and inspiring.

I chose to do a sets of berets in different colors, flower and other designs (that I will post here later)

I really like seeing them all together and I love the decorative stitching in the same color as the felt.

I made bread!

For a long time now I have been wanting to try this new book I received a while ago : My Bread.
It looked easy , but this was my first bread so I was nervous.
It was easy, the only downside is that you need time. But in my case it worked well to mix the dough with the kids the evening and bake the next morning. The result is so worth it! It bread was tasty, nice crust and soft in the middle. I do think thought that my pot is never going to be the same again..... I will have to look for second hand pots to bake in from now on.
Here are a few photos for the different steps. Now I can't wait to try some of the other bread recipes in there.

Fall is coming so that means lot of felt in my work space.

I just found this great Etsy shop.

She sells 100% felt and let me tell you the colours are amazing!

With my order I also received the colour swatch cards and a great gift.

We are not talking a bit of string, but actual usable pieces of felt in colours I did not order.

Impressed am I!

Sweet mushroom basket

Just look what I picked up last week. This is the sweetest basket with painted toadstools on it .

Ady looks so sweet carrying it around and packing it full of little things.

It is in great shape and has hinges in the back so the lid stays on.(bonus)

I have been trying to make my studio look better by really cleaning up!
This usually happened in January, but since I just came back form a six week holiday, it felt right to really get in there and organize, get rid of and move things around.

The sad part was that I had to start by putting away the stuff from the last show.....uhg!

Anyway after many hours sorting and cutting and dusting and re-arranging it finally felt so nice today that I started working!

I am not sure at all how long the cottons will stay like this but it is so nice to see them all together!
This is the best way I found to organize my " so nice and too small to really use pieces" of fabric. I found this great laundry basket at the Container store.

Still some things to put away but so much nicer!

While reading my blog list this morning , I came upon these wonderful dolls made by Molly from the Purl Bee.

WOW this wins the" cuete" award for the day!

I love the Pearl Bee blog for just this reason. Lovely inspriring work using amazing materials.

These dolls are from a new book Wee Wonderfuls: 24 dolls to sew and love by Hillary Lang

I would love to make some of these dolls for my girl. I love the mermaid and also the round belly dolly in the middle. She looks like a sea creature.

Yeah , I finally reached 40!
Who knew I would be so happy to see it.
So far I am happy to report no changes, although I did see some weird sagging this morning. But I think it is unrelated!
I am sharing some photos of a last minute after school drop off gathering with friends. Wish the family could have made it....maybe for my 50th!

Hi there blog friends.
I am back from my six week holiday and full of new ideas!
Now that there is a chill in the morning air, the sun rays look weaker coming through the windows it is time to start thinking of felt and velvet.
I am also really lucky to be part of the SOWA holiday market this year so there is a lot of work to be done.

Linen scarfs

This scarf is a combination of linen and silk chiffon.

I am feverishly working to get ready for the show this weekend in Somerville.
Today I am giving you a preview of the linen scarfs I just finished.

This scarf is patchwork linen with a vintage buckle.

This was so fun to make. I cut out a bodice from a very old dress, and cut out pink vintage lace . This was sewn on by hand all over this linen scarf.

The accent is around the neck.

This makes it possible to use as a shawl or scarf. There is also a chocolate brown sparkly linen.

I don't want to look like a Leopard

I made my son some new shorts last week.
This is how I see it.
Not long now and he is not going to wear anything I make at all. Although almost six, he still prefers elastic waist pants. What I did forget was that he is growing and getting an opinion on what he likes.

So after finishing the pants I asked him to try them on, he did, but when I suggested he wear them on a recent field trip he ran away! I did stay calm (gasp) And when I asked him why he did not like them he said " I don't want to look like a leopard.

He has since worn them twice and is now happy to resemble an animal!

I cuffed the pant leg with linen and I do like the look

In stead of an label I sewed in a piece of contrasting fabric to mark the back

I like them!

Bow ties

I just finished making a birthday present for a special boy we know.
He loves dress up and can get very excited over the right kind of clothes.
Sounds like a challenge to me! And the perfect excuse to sew something different.

I made him 3 really fancy bow ties to wear. They are all different, one small and more somber(green), for maybe with a shirt, the other really playful with a dog bone print in red and white and the third a over the top, fancy , big , polka dot and plaid tie.

I opted for a band and velcro closure in stead of the real tie me I am a bow tie ties.

I love them!

Button fun

On Sunday morning, I decided to take if very easy with the kids.
We seem to be running around way too much, rushing in and out of the house to this party and that practice and school and homework !

So after we did the latest math homework I asked if they wanted to see some buttons. Now you have to understand that I will only share some of the buttons I have with them and they were amazed to know that I have even more! I chose the biggest tin that has the bigger buttons in them.

They has so much fun. I was great to see how they approached this task. We spoke about what is similar, how many holes some has and then started matching.
I was amazed at how good my three year old was at doing this. She can look over the sea of buttons and find two or three matches.

They both now have a jar of their own buttons next to their beds .

After we had gone through them all I realized once again that I have some buttons that will never be used, and that is Ok with me, they are really like old friends.

It's a jungle out there

I thought it might be fun to look back a bit and see how much I love animal print. I really love animal print. Snake, leopard,zebra,giraffe even cow. I love wearing animal print and I love working and creating with these prints.

They never go out of style just come and go. You will always find someone that loves them.

Silk chiffon

I have been working on some silk chiffon scarfs this week and realized that they show why I love one of a kind pieces so much.

I love not having to sew the same piece twice
I love coming up with new ideas,and fresh new colour combinations
I love using one of a kind "finds" like these buttons and buckles .

There is a lot to be said for work that you can repeat and produce fast. But I think my love will always be with these one of pieces. Keeps me on my toes and uses up all my bits and pieces of clutter in my stash of stuff!

Easter dress, Burda 6796

What a nice warm, busy weekend.
I got really distracted last week while cutting lining for sun hats by a raspberry red linen!

So started a unplanned easter dress.
I have been thinking of making her a dress after seeing this dress.
As it was last minute I did not have time to look for a new pattern or go and buy fabric. So if you look closely one side of the dress is grey linen and the other has a mix of beige linen.
The pattern is Burda 6796. In stead of a contrasting color band at the bottom, I did the triangles.
I measured , traced and cut the triangles, the sewing was challenging , but I got better towards the end.

The best part was that she loved it!

We have made it through broken arms, blue eyes, floods and stiff necks but now it is back to the sewing machine for a while.

I used Anna Maria Horner's new Voile line. This fabric makes you dream and dream!

These are silk chiffon scarfs with vintage plastic rings for wait and accent.

What we have been doing...

Yes it has been a while. I have been quite busy keeping my little girl busy.
She broke her arm and had to undergo surgery so she has been needing more than a lot of help and attention.
When I picked her up after the accident she was wrapped in the little blanket I made for her for school. This became OUR security blanket for the next 24 hours. She came out of the operating room with the blanket neatly placed over her. It really confirmed my love and need for fabric and was reminded how little things like that can make us calm and can make us feel at home even if we are not.

I ran to Savers to buy any long sleeve t-shirt that would fit her and cut off the right arm. This worked very well, except for bed time when she got very upset that she could not wear the right pants with the right top!
To keep her very comfy and me busy creating, I made 2 pairs of comfy, flannel pants. I love these so much and keep wondering why I don't sew for myself. She loved pinning the pattern with her "good' hand and she really loved putting these on.

Her recovery is going really well and we are all looking forward to getting the cast of and getting on with life.

The fabric is from Jo-Anne and the pants pattern is just a "copy" of pants we have. I gave the pants a extra wide , double cuff, I think it makes them look all grown up.

Boston Handmade

I recently joined a wonderful group of crafters called Boston Handmade.

This group consists of a group of very talented crafters that do almost everything. The great thing for me is that I now have a resorse for crafting. Where questions can be asked and answered by a group.
The other really great thing is that there are crafters that just started, people in the middle and people that are really successful at what they do and have been doing it for years.

Designer fabric hats

Today I am sharing with you some new spring / summer hats I have been making. I love the new Anna Maria Horner fabrics I bought earlier in the year. Her colour combinations are just fantastic! These roses are lovely and stand out even more with the black and white fine polka dot. The fabric is from her Garden party line.

This has got to be one of my favorite colour combinations. Pink and yellow. I think lining the brim with the yellow fabric works very well. This way you can flip the brim up and have a different look.
These fabrics are from her Good Folks line.

The next fabric is from Patty Young's flora and fauna, Hummingbirds.
I made a wide brim hat out of this fabric this way you see even more of the little birds.

Much needed doorstop

Last night I made a much needed doorstop for the kids room.

The door tends to close by itself and I got real tired of dragging the laundry basket to keep the door open.We also open their door when we go to bed just so that we can hear the stirring (and couching at the moment)

I used linen and cotton fabric. A while ago when I made the Nap time quilt, I bought a three pieces from Kokka Japan. I did not use the owls but so love them . So here they are keeping the door open for me so the light can come into the passage and I love seeing them.

I sort of made the pattern as I went along. I did make the bottom of a really nice linen and added rick rack. In retrospect that is not worth doing. It is best to cut a long strip for the sides and bottom. The rick rack would have been nicer along the sides.

I will next time make it smaller as I used 3 bags of beans and then some stuffing to keep the shape. I did use a bag inside just in case something happens to the beans. You can also use rice.

I love the handle most of all.

Valentines day cards

This was really the first year that we made Valentine's card for school friends.

Valentines day is just not so big where we are from. So this was one more exercise in adapting to American culture, (we have been here for ten years so I guess it is about time!)

We opted for fabric hearts that can be used as decoration around the house. Mr A really got into sewing on my lap and found the way the machine hooks the thread just "awsom"! He sewed (with my help) at least 10 of the 22 hearts. He then had to write his name and all 22 names of his class mates. It took us 2 days to complete. He did great!

Ms A did some of hers but got distracted by playing office.

Fabric snack bag

Finally!
I have been looking at this project since Dec 2009. It was going to be part of the pile of Christmas presents for Mr A but just never got done.

I have been trying to wash and reuse plastic bags for a while but cant really get into it. Maybe just lazy, so I hope that using this fabric bag will help the environment and this way I can do my small part.

I bought a kit from Spool Sewing . It comes with interfacing, fabric and velcro and the very important instructions . I have to admit to making a few mistakes....but was able to correct all of them. The one change I did make was to sew on a long strip of Velcro in stead of just two tabs. I think it will be easier to close.

Now I would love to make more. I think I will need at least 2 more in case of some very bad spills and maybe a fun oilcloth one if the fabric gets too dirty. I wonder how this will hold up in the wash?

I might also experiment with attaching a handle just so the five year old hands can pick it up easier and faster.

I feel like making fabric baskets for the entire house, soooooo many possibilities!

Berets to weather the storm

Today I listed a few more berets on etsy. I really like these. They are so easy to wear and a lot of fun to make.

They are all unique in that I use vintage buttons for the inside of the "flower". I am so happy to have so many buttons , but find myself longing for Brimfield so I can buy some more really big ones! If you live in the area and have not been to this great event it is really great and worth going.

The flowers or petals were all cut from recycled sweaters and this had been great at keeping cost low and colours fun.

Valentines day is in the air....

I think this is just an excuse to get through this month of February. Oh boy, now this winter is starting to feel long. I find myself longing for the heat my family is speaking of in South Africa. Maybe they keep saying that to make me feel better. ....it is not working!

Scarf for him

Once a year I shift my mind to think of not so much pink and frills and flower but a more streamlined, manly scarf and hat set.

Luckily I always find a way to make one he likes. This year I used a warm fleece and herringbone combo. I really like how it came out and he seems to love wearing it.

Nap time quilt

Happy new year everyone!

Over the holiday season I did not sew a lot. Part was taking time and just eating a lot and playing with the kids and visiting with friends and part is that my studio floor is in the middle of being replaced after the flood we had in the basement.

So I found myself Sat night dragging my sewing machine and iron upstairs to start a nap blanket for the little one.

She is starting preschool today and I wanted to make her something cozy and special to have.

I got great new fabric from Fabricworm . How could I resist these dots? I also fell in love with the retro / folksy Japanese fabric.

The sad part was I could not use all of the colours and designs and had to choose my favorites.

It ended up crazy and lovely and happy and dotty. Just like I planned.....

I loosely based the quilt on the pillow on the front cover of the Spring 2009 Stitch magazine. It is very easy and fast . I can see myself using this way of quilting again. Not too much measuring and the potential to use a lot of scraps and a nice end result.

Butterfly party

Allow me to show you what we did during the blizzard on Sunday. Our little one turned three. So hard to believe that three years ago she came into our lives.

She was very sure that she wanted a butterfly party. So this is what we did.

The goodie bags had butterfly stickers , a small book, marker butterfly

spinner and a star shaped crayon. These came from the amazing Stubby Pencil Studio.

We had butterflies hanging from the ceiling cut from craft paper. We decorated hats with butterfly stickers and I found these great coloring sheets from Dover puplishing that after you colour them you can hang them on a window and they look like stained class.

I got the idea for these sandwiches from a old Martha Stewart magazine. It is just wrapping paper and double sided tape! Looks great but not a lot of work.

The cake was a 4 layer red velvet cake and had candy, butterflies and a lovely " Vintage By Crystal" dollie as a cake topper.

We had a great time!

My Christmas tree in a BLOG!

Today I am so excited to tell you that our Christmas tree was featured on the Glitter and Grunge blog!

Take a look. I have had a lot of fun decorating this year. Our tree looks great . Full of vintage ornaments, bought ornaments from years past and lots of African inspired ornaments thanks to family sending them every year. I think this is the best tree we have ever had!

Holiday decorating

This week I made my first ever Christmas wreath.

I am really happy with how it turned out. At first I was sure that it will decorate the dumpster , but then....it al came together thanks to a lot of rick-rack thrifted over a the last year.

I started with a basic shape I got from the craft store. Then just ripped up pieces of fabric that I thought would look good together . Next time I will take the time to cut fabric out in stead tearing as I spent a long time making things look neater.

I used some batting to add the curve in front. Next time I will use just a basic fabric to hold these down in place and to give another layer to the wreath.

Once the glue gun was hot I pulled the fabric around the wreath fairly tight. Once the wreath

was covered in fabric I started with the rick rack. This I think really makes it!

Lastly I cut out some flowers from felted sweaters and glued those on with the fun buttons as centers.

In the back I just made a loop with bias tape and it was all done.

Al lot of fun and I love coming home!

New fascinator/hair goodies

Hi there,

I am so excited to show you these pictures! In spite of a very unfortunate flood, yes water in my studio, I managed to walk over the piles of towels, ignore the start of a very faint smell of mold and come up with these great fascinators!

They are very comfy to wear and adds such dreamy , vintage style to your hair , I just love them.

New style winter hat

This look feels fresh and new and I am looking forward to working more on this new idea.

Pieced flower beret

Here is something new I have been playing with. I was working on sewing circles onto berets when I suddenly started sewing the circles together! And look how it turned out!

It all looked just a bit flat to me so the hand embroidered small circle made it complete.

I really wanted the flowers to stand away form the beret ......but I was not sure that it worked as fashion statement.

Fun girls pants

I made another comfy pair of pants for the little big girl in my life.

I found this really bright green cord form Jo-Anne's and could not pass it by.

So I found inspiration here and sewed these.

I am also wondering and looking at these, stay tuned.

Again with just a elastic waist. I made sure not to make them too wide in the leg and I like the way they turned out. They have been through the wash and the applique is staying and fraying at the right places.

Fun Cat Pants

At last I had time to sew up some pants for the smallest or shall I say youger member of our family.

And how theme appropriate to have her wear cat pants today!

I found this great fabric at Jo-Anne's . It is a very soft , fine cord. She is going through a "I love Cats" period and seeing that we will not be getting a cat soon this was the next best thing.

The pants are cut from a pair that I made the previous year and I just added a inch and a half to the leg and a bit in the waist. She was very worried that I was cutting the old pants but had her first lesson in "cutting around" and "using as a pattern".

After they were done they did look a bit like pajama pants and that gave me the idea to have a cat face on the one pant leg. Not sure how long the whiskers will hold but we will see.

The waist is just elastic as we need easy access these days!

Felt Berets

Oh wow it is cold today!

I am still working very hard on some fall beret's.

Last season I started the polka dot berets and they were very popular.

This year there is a lot of flowers form the recycled sweaters and then there is a bit of beading and some more dots!

Hope to get a few more done soon and load them onto Etsy.

Scarf weather

Fun washcloths

I have recently made some of these washcloths for the kids and decided to makes some for my Mom's visit that is fast approaching.

I used just pieces of left over cotton for the bias strips and this makes for a very colourful display.

I made two of these bigger with loops, so it will be easy to hang. I just extended the bias strip, made the loop and continued the sewing.

There will be a lot more of these made as gifts, they are fun and quick to make and looks great!

Sneak Peak #2

Today showing you my fall scarfs I am working on. I have had the linen for a long time and finally started making scarfs last week.

I love how some of the colours have a bit of a shimmer.

( You cant really see it really well in the photo , but the scarf has vintage beads at the bottom and LOVELY French vintage trim.)

These scarfs will work really well with a denim jacket or paired with linen pants.

I made this patchwork scarf last and think there is more to come in this idea.

Sneak Peak

The summer has been quite busy but I am so keen to show you a sneak peak of what I am working on in the studio. This year I am felting wool sweaters from Savers. This has given me so much pleasure. Not only to "hunt" for the right colour but also to reuse the sweaters and i love the texture these sweaters add to the basic beret.

I found such great buttons at Brimfield this year and plan to use almost all of them.

The other interesting thing is that the pieces that gets cut off from a sweater can turn into.....a hat!

Not sure if this will be how this hat will turn out but here is a hat in progress.

Baby quilt and gifts

A while ago we were very lucky to have the arrival of a new baby girl , no not in our house but in a household that we know very well. So I had to send her a little quilt of her own. The quilt was a very last minute idea(when are they not) but so much fun to make.

I kept it very simple and got all the fabric from Jo-Anne's . Front all cotton and back matching flannel. The quilting itself took a long time , but I am pleased with it.

Also for my friend Kate I made this plastic bag holder. Yes I know we are all suppose to be more green, but if you have kids with diapers you have some kind of plastic bag to dispose of it all.

She phoned one day with a request and it was fun to remember my mother in law's one hanging miles away.( Maybe she needs a new one.) I love this fabric and now I need to make myself one too.

Nothing better than a sequin cape!

Around two weeks ago I had a request from a certain boy that he was in need of a sparkle and purple velvet cape. Oh and it had to have a lightning bolt on. Needless to say I had to make one for his sister too.

Three night ago he gave me permission to " work though the night until I finish the capes"

Well I had to do it!

The fabric is from Jo Anne's . I do still want to change the piece around the neck to a bigger piece of fabric that rests on the shoulder and fastens with a press stud. The elastic and button does pull around the neck.

So here are the capes.!

New summer hat

Boys pants

I recently stumbled over Ottobre designs and loved their kids clothing.

They have an option to print out free designs for embroidery and to sew onto clothing for boys and girls.

I have had these printed out for a while now and finally got some time on Friday to make up a nice pair of pants in green and white stripe seersucker fabric.

I just used a pair that fits at the moment and traced the size and then just adjusted the length.

I then used the owl design from their website and although they say you don't have to sew over the design i did secure it with a decorative stitch. I know how may times i am going to wash these.

I love the result and will use this technique again.

I just finished this great hat for my little one last night. I could not wait for her to wake up and try in on. (see the first image of her eating breakfast with the hat on!)

I used my basic hat pattern and just measured her head to get it right.

It took a few tries as it was not so easy to figure out where to take away and when it was too much.

Fabric choice was hard but I love the fabric we chose(yes Mike was roped in).

The under brim fabric is blue and off-white and I just cut a strip of fabric and sewed it onto the hat in a shape of a flower.

The brim also has decoration around it that just gives it a finished look.

One thing I did notice during the day was that it moves around but the hat still looks good no matter how it sits on her head!
